Reclaiming ChurchStill the Hope of the World If I am committed to Christ, then I will love what He loves. Jesus loves the Church – He gave his life for her. So you should love the Church because your Saviour does. That’s the main point of the new sermon series this autumn. Sometimes it’s hard as a churchgoer in our secularized culture not to feel that we are merely propping up an increasingly irrelevant institution. The majority vote with their feet on a Sunday and are not in church. Even those who are supposed to be on our side are peddling a cynical “Jesus is great but the Church sucks” attitude in their books, articles and sermons. The Church definitely isn’t perfect: some of our ways are quaint, our traditions and language arcane, and our moral track record patchy. But let’s hear it for the Church! Not the building or the institution, but a movement of faith, hope and love. The people grounded in Christ and His Word, filled by His Spirit and at it’s best, offering an experience of community, which is unique. If God thinks the Church is eternally important then maybe we need to reclaim His positive perspective and generous attitude towards it.
