Re-Member: Ruth Rhydderch
Ruth is one of the part-time cooks at the Dalton Street centre and has kindly stopped cooking to talk to us
Ruth, tell us a bit about yourself. Well I’m married to Nick, and we have 4 children.
I used to be a nurse, worked as a carer for 6 years and now I am here cooking.
So, how long have you been at Highfields? We have been here 15 years, since 1995.
We genuinely left our old church to go to a smaller one (back then there were only around
120 people!)
As we know you are one of the new cooks at the Dalton Street centre.
How are you finding it so far? It’s really pleasant. It was tricky at first, as there were
a number of things that needed to be sorted out at the centre that the council had not
completed. But, with people pitching in, it all got done. Now, at the end of the 2nd
week of cooking, things are going well. The old people are really appreciating the care,
and love the newly refurbished building.
Why did you decide to work at Dalton Street? Well, I knew it was something I could do;
cooking is a skill I have, it is local to where I live, so these people are my neighbours
and I could see there was ‘a gap in the market’ for something like this, compared to what
Highfields was already doing. Since the council offered to fill this gap I thought ‘If I
don’t help, then I can’t expect others to!’
What’s your favourite thing about it? Watching them play bingo! Getting to know the
characters and seeing the potential. It’s great to see them loving what we are cooking too!
